In the goal of avoiding the toxic substance fluoride is, many people have asked: does distilling water remove fluoride?
To answer this, I bought and tested the top-rated water distiller on Amazon.
However, I suggest you read past the fluoride test results, as I’ll touch on if you should use a distiller and if a distiller is your best option to remove fluoride.

Does Distilling Water Remove Fluoride?
To figure out if distilling water removes fluoride, I did two things…
- Test how much fluoride was in my apartment’s tap water.
- Followed by testing the distilled water to see if any change happened in fluoride content.
Now let’s see how much fluoride is in my apartment’s tap water…
According to the fluoride meter, my tap water contains 0.7 ppm of fluoride.
With this in mind, it’s time to see how much fluoride the distiller will remove…
So, does distilling water remove fluoride?
According to the fluoride meter, distilling water DOES remove fluoride. In fact, it took fluoride levels in tap water from 0.7 ppm to 0.0 ppm, essentially removing ALL fluoride. Which shows us distilled water does NOT contain fluoride and is a great fluoride-free option.
So if you’re looking to buy a distiller, here’s the exact one I bought (link to Amazon).
Now if I’m being honest, it’s no surprise that distilling water removes fluoride.
The process of distilling is used by many brands of bottled water.
For example, one brand that distills it’s water is Smartwater. And because they do so, when I tested a bottle – it contained 0.0 ppm of fluoride.
However, it’s important to note that boiling and distilling water is not the same thing. Yes, the first step in distilling is to boil the water. But a kettle is not capable of enacting the entire distillation process.
This is why in does boiling water remove fluoride, boiling water was shown to have zero effect on fluoride.
Now with this out of the way, let’s get to an important question…
Should You Use A Distiller To Filter Water?
After testing and using it for a few weeks, here are the pros and cons I experienced while using a water distiller to filter out fluoride.
Of which is compared to my experiences using other water filters.
PROS:
- Pure filtered water: since it produces pure water (H2O) it ranks as the cleanest filtered water you can get
- Cheap: inexpensive to buy and maintain. Perfect filter for someone who’s looking for a cheap but quality water filter and doesn’t mind the cons mentioned below
CONS:
- Size: takes up a lot of countertop space in comparison to the small amount of water it produces (will only produce enough water for 1 person).
- Noise: slight fan noise due to the cooling down process of distillation
- Slow: it took 4 hours for the distiller to filter an entire jug
- Manual fill-up: each time you have to fill-up the distiller by hand
- Runs on electricity: if your power goes out, so does your source of filtered water
So the way I see it is like this…
If you’re looking for a cheap way to filter fluoride and don’t mind the cons, then get a distiller.
But if you are able to spend a little more money, there are a couple other filters I’d recommend over the distiller.
