Why Should I Detox My Body Of Fluoride?
It’s no secret that your health is the foundation of your life.
Everything depends on it.
How well we can perform at work, how well we can be parents to our children and in general, how much we can enjoy life – all depends on how healthy we are.
For example, take a second to think how much you enjoy life when you have a pounding headache or while your lower back is hurting…
I know, I don’t.
The reason I mention this is because you want to build your health on a solid foundation.
You especially don’t want to be like the guy from the Bible, who build his house on sand (a weak foundation) and eventually had a storm wash his house away.
However, by exposing yourself to fluoride everyday, you’re building your health on a weak foundation.
Now with fluoride’s cumulative nature, more and more of it will accumulate in your body (only 50% is excreted by the kidney) making it a matter of when not if fluoride affects your health(1).
While on the contrary, eliminating fluoride exposure will help you build and keep your health on a strong foundation.
How To Perform A Fluoride Detox?
A fluoride detox follows two general steps.
- Eliminate all fluoride exposure.
- Followed by actively removing all the accumulated fluoride in your body.
FYI, this article won’t be a lesson about what is fluoride, it’s for those that are serious and want to completely eliminate fluoride from their lives.

Now, let’s blast through it.
Part 1: Eliminate All Fluoride Exposure
Logically, it makes sense to start with eliminating the substance that causes all the damage.
The good news is that once you eliminate all fluoride exposure, your body will naturally start to eliminate accumulated fluoride(2).
Along with this being the most important part of the fluoride detox, it is also the easiest.
All you have to do to eliminate the different sources of fluoride is make a choice.
A choice to drink different water, use different toothpaste, drink certified fluoride-free tea and so on…
1. Drink Fluoride-Free Water
The is the most urgent step out of the entire fluoride detox.
Since we drink water (including tea and coffee) and cook with it everyday, fluoridated water is the largest source of fluoride you’ll be exposed to throughout your entire life(3,4).
Now the best way to get fluoride-free water is to use a fluoride water filter (link to my guide that helps you choose the right one).
Especially since fluoride is extremely stubborn to filter, all do-it-yourself methods fail to remove fluoride. Including boiling water, which was shown in does boiling water remove fluoride, to have zero effect on fluoride.
However, the sad truth is that many water filter brands LIE about their filters being able to remove fluoride.

2. Use Fluoride-Free Toothpaste
Toothpaste is an extremely potent source of fluoride.
So what seems like a little “pea-sized” amount of toothpaste is actually a lot of fluoride.
But putting aside the fact no one should be using fluoride-toothpaste, it’s especially important for children to avoid using it.
They have a less well-developed swallowing reflex and their toothpaste tastes good, making it more likely to swallow.
Now considering their are many fluoride-free toothpastes that contain other toxic ingredients, it’s best if you take a look at fluoride in toothpaste (link to article).
That’s where you’ll be able search over 132+ toothpastes and see if they contain fluoride. That’s also where I’ll tell you the other ingredients to avoid.
3. Drink Fluoride-Free Tea And Coffee
After testing 329+ teas, it’s clear that fluoride in tea is the largest source of ingested fluoride worldwide.
In fact, both pro and anti-fluoride groups would have to agree that many teas contain unsafe fluoride levels.
However, many teas contain two, three, and even six times what’s typically found in tap water across North America.
Making it important for tea-drinkers to be aware of fluoride levels.
So to help you figure this out, you can search over 329+ brands of tea and their fluoride levels at fluoride in tea.
On the other hand, information on fluoride levels in coffee is very limited.
Knowing this, I couldn’t help myself and decided to go out and test 238+ types of coffee.

But in general, there is a lot less fluoride in coffee compared to tea.
In fact, coffee is mostly fluoride-free but there are a few sneaky exceptions.
4. Avoid Using Teflon Coated Cookware (Non-Stick)
My kitchen, your kitchen, and probably every kitchen you’ve ever stepped foot in has at least one of these bad boys laying around.
Here are some quick facts about PFCs:
- Man-made compounds that did not exists prior to industrial civilization(10)
- Does not break down, accumulates in the environment and in the human body(10)
- Found in the blood of nearly every American(11)
- Increases the likelihood of cancer, weakens the immune system and disrupts thyroid hormone production(11)
What’s worse is the effect it has on women of child-bearing age…
A study conducted by the UCLA school of public health uncovered that women with higher levels of PFCs in their blood had a much harder time getting pregnant than those with lower levels(12).
Anywhere from 60% to 154% more likely to experience infertility.
With infertility being defined as taking longer than 12 months to become pregnant or seeking medical treatment to become pregnant.
So the next time you start cooking, what should you use?
Avoid the use of Teflon and other non-stick pans, and use cast-iron or stainless steel pans.
With a little effort, a similar non-stick effect can be achieved.

5. Try To Avoid Medication Containing Fluoride
I was surprised to realize how many medications contain fluoride…
Anesthetics, antacids, anti-anxiety, antibiotics, antidepressants, antifungals, antihistamines, cholesterol-lowering medications, anti-malarial, chemotherapy, arthritis medications, psychotropics, and steroids(13).
Now, I’m not going to tell you to not take your medication.
However, since drugs containing fluoride can be a high source of daily fluoride intake, it’s best to know if your medication contains it.
To help you figure this out, you can search your medication at drugs that contain fluoride.
Bonus: Get a Reusable and Safe Water Bottle
After completing step 1, you now have clean, fresh, and healthy water.
And you’ll want to get yourself a water bottle that will keep it that way.
Unfortunately, many people forget this step and drink water from a water bottle that leaks toxic plastic compounds into their filtered water.
Now I will tell you why you should get the bottle I have or something like it:
- High Quality: there may be other bottles that look better but with the one I have, you will avoid leaks, rusting and toxic materials entering your water. Which makes sense as it was extremely hard to find any bad reviews about it.
- Big Size: you may be tempted to get a smaller water bottle. But if you’re drinking filtered water, you want it to last you long enough while you’re at work, the gym or wherever else (32 or 40 OZ options available, I have the 40 OZ)
Part 2: Help Your Body Detox Fluoride
The previous steps were easy because all you have to do is buy something and use it, with very little effort (i.e, drinking water, using a different pan, using fluoride-free toothpaste).
The good news is the first part is the most important.
Thus if you did nothing more than part 1, you’ll be safe from fluoride’s toxicity.
On the other hand, if you want to go above and beyond, part 2 will help you do exactly that.
6. Fluoride Detox Diet
Obviously, you want to avoid eating fluoride.
The good thing is that after finishing part 1 you don’t have to worry about ingesting fluoride as much, since your water, tea, coffee, and anything you cook with is fluoride-free.
All you have to do now is keep an eye out for foods high in fluoride (link to where you can search the fluoride content on 503+ foods)
Now a way to ensure you’re eating a fluoride-detox friendly diet is to follow these general rules when eating:
- Foods high in antioxidants: ex, pomegranate, vegetables, bone broth.
- Include spices: curcumin, tamarind, cayenne…
- Use herbs and leafy greens: parsley, cilantro, spinach…
- Stick to whole foods and when possible organic: this will help you avoid pesticides, insecticides and food additives that commonly contain fluoride.
Following these general rules will set your body straight and accelerate the fluoride detox without overwhelming yourself on small details.
You can’t go wrong with exercise.
Sweating is one of the best ways to remove toxins from the body. Whether you want to do this through free-weight training,
CrossFit, yoga, or running, is up to you.
Just keep in mind, the best gym routine is one you enjoy and can do consistently.
The goal here is to be and stay active.
8. Supplements For A Fluoride Detox
At this point you don’t really need to do much since you’ve taken care of what’s most important.
However, when it comes to supplements, you should only buy and use them if you think you’re not getting enough through your diet.
And if you don’t see a supplement here but have seen it on other websites, there’s a reason for that, which is addressed in the FAQ section below (i.e, Borax, Iodine, Tamarind).
As the goal of this post is to help you buy the products you need and that will help you a lot. Not tell you about 12 different supplements that “could” help you.
In fact, there are only 3 supplements that you should take to help detox your body of fluoride.
These three supplements are, vitamin D, vitamin C and calcium.
As many studies have shown the combination of these three substances have been known to reverse the effects of dental and skeletal fluorosis(14,15,16).
Calcium is one of the biggest known substances in fighting fluoride.
To the point where, people who accidentally ingest a large amount of fluoride are told to immediately drink cups of milk(17).
Foods high in calcium: seeds, cheese, yogurt, almonds, leafy greens (spinach, kale, collard greens) and sardines(18).
Percentage of Americans that do not meet daily requirement: 44.1%(19)
The sunshine vitamin is hands down the most important supplement on this list.
Mainly because a large amount of people need to supplement with it, regardless if they are doing a fluoride detox or not.
Especially if you live in parts of the world where the sun is not strong all year around or if you don’t get much sun.
And when it comes to detoxing from fluoride, vitamin D increases the absorption of calcium, thus directly affecting the absorption of fluoride (15)
However, the problem here is that vitamin D is not naturally present in many foods (wild fish or grass-finished animal products).
Making supplementing the easier choice when sun exposure is limited.
Foods high in vitamin D: salmon, herring, sardines, cod liver oil, grass-finished animal product(20).

Vitamin C (Ascorbic Acid)
Vitamin C is an important substance that helps heal damage caused by fluoride.
Acting as an essential substance to the human bodies production of proline, one of the most important amino acids of collagen.
Which is important as collagen is the base material for bone and tooth matrix(21).
Foods high in vitamin C: sweet pepper, parsley, kale, kiwis, broccoli, lemons, strawberries, citrus fruit(22).

In addition to the above 3, you should make sure you have sufficient magnesium intake.
Like calcium, magnesium plays a vital role in bone formation and the battle against fluoride.
What’s most impressive is that magnesium is a cofactor in over 300 enzymatic reactions. In other words, magnesium is needed in order to perform over 300 different actions in our body(23).
The good news is that you can get the magnesium you need from dark leafy greens.
The bad news is that half of America is not getting enough magnesium.
This possibly due to the possibility of the soil these dark leafy greens are grown being depleted in minerals…

Foods high in magnesium: leafy greens (spinach, kale, collard greens) almonds, macadamia nuts, pecans, dark chocolate, avocado, seeds (flax, pumpkin and chia seeds)(24).

I suggest you supplement through food but if can’t or would rather not, then here are dietary supplements (pills) that are SAFE to use.
The thing is, not every brand of vitamins is of good quality and some could even be harmful to your health.

By completing this fluoride detox, you essentially dodged all the health effects of fluoride.
Worrying about dental fluorosis, skeletal fluorosis, brain damage and thyroid problems are now a thing of the past.
Talk about hitting not 2 birds, but multiple birds with one stone.
However, the benefits don’t stop there.
1. Healthy Newborns and Babies
Eliminating and detoxing from fluoride can be the difference between a baby having the opportunity to grow up with excellent health or making frequent trips to the hospital.
Since the placenta can not block environmental toxins, the baby is directly exposed to fluoride within the body.
Now considering the size and lack of development of unborn, newly born or young children, fluoride’s effects are much worse the younger you are.
Especially on vulnerable and developing brains:
