If you don’t want poison fluoride in your water and want to save money, you’ll want to know how to remove fluoride from water cheaply.
Thankfully, you’ve come to the right place.
How To Remove Fluoride From Water Cheaply?
Unfortunately, fluoride is extremely hard to filter out of water.
It’s also extremely difficult to find information on the internet that is not from a company pitching their own product OR from someone that has never used the product they recommend.
With that being said, to help you navigate through all this information, I’ve tested the top 7 methods on how to remove fluoride from water cheaply.
Now before we start, let’s establish the fluoride levels of my apartment’s tap water.
This way we can compare the numbers before and after testing a certain method…
The fluoride meter registered 0.6 ppm of fluoride in my apartment’s tap water.
With that done, let’s get to testing the top 7 methods…
How To Remove Fluoride From Water Cheaply {7 Methods Tested}
1. Boiling Water
Boiling water is the only method on how to remove fluoride from water for free.
A very popular question also but all you need to know is that boiling water does not remove fluoride.
In fact, since fluoride does not evaporate easily like chlorine; as the water is boiled and total volume decreases, the fluoride concentration may actually go up.
Crushing any hopes to remove fluoride for free…
My test results show zero change in fluoride levels after boiling – 0.6 ppm before boiling and 0.6 ppm after boiling.
On to the next method…
2. Holy Basil (Tulsi)
There was this one time I was surfing the internet and read…
“Holy Basil is one of the best, proven and natural method of removing fluoride from water that is currently replacing other expensive ways”
I was impressed, how could you not be?
The author of that site even claimed up to “80% fluoride removal efficiency”!
Unfortunately, my results painted a different picture…
Holy Basil leaves do not remove fluoride, in fact they had zero effect on fluoride levels.
However, the good news is you could use holy basil as a fluoride-free tea.
3. Activated Charcoal
It may or may not remove other impurities from your water but when it comes to fluoride, activated charcoal does NOT filter out fluoride.
If it was that easy, millions of people around the world suffering from fluoride’s bone crushing effects would be able to filter out the naturally high fluoride levels from their drinking water.
Unfortunately, that’s not the case.
The results show no difference in fluoride levels after using activated charcoal.
As you can tell, fluoride is a very stubborn contaminant to filter out of water.
A contaminant that requires more advanced technology.
The good news is that from this point on, the next 4 methods are proven to filter fluoride completely.
Now, I’m aware that those reading this article are looking for the cheapest way to remove fluoride (who wouldn’t want to save some money?).
However, these next 4 methods require you to spend a little money first.
But once you see the cost per gallon, you’ll understand how cheap these methods truly are, which will save you $1000’s.
4. Water Filter Pitchers
For the longest time, water pitchers were unable to remove fluoride and only able to filter out a handful of contaminants like chlorine.
While some brands like Brita are still unable to filter fluoride, other brands have improved their filtering technology and are now able to filter fluoride.
Clearly Filtered, Zerowater, and PUR are the main ones – all of which were able to reduce fluoride from 0.6 ppm to 0.0 ppm.
With the average cost per filtered gallon of water being $0.44.
And of the 21+ water filter pitchers I’ve tested, Clearly Filtered (link to their website) is hands down the best. With the main pros being it filters out way more toxins and the filters last longer than any other brand – saving you money in filter replacements.
But let’s take a look at a few other options before deciding on which one is best for you.
5. Distillers
Distillation is another proven way to remove fluoride from water.
When tested, it produced fluoride-free water… taking tap water from 0.7 ppm to 0.0 ppm.
However, I’m not the biggest fan of distillers.
Not because they don’t filter water well. In fact, if you’re looking for pure water then it does not get any better than distillers. It’s probably the cleanest water you can get, alongside reverse osmosis water.
The only downside is that it takes around 4 hours to fill one jug.
While when it comes to cost, after purchasing a distiller your average cost per gallon will be a few cents (basically whatever it adds to your electricity bill).
6. Gravity-Fed Filters
Berkey water filters were once one of my favorite filters I’d use to remove fluoride from water cheaply BUT recently I ran further tests on them and decided to revoke my recommendation.
And the sole reason for this is that the Berkey leached aluminum into the filtered water.
If you’d like to read more about this, please refer to the article “Berkey Water Filters Are A SCAM & Unsafe” (link to article).
7. Reverse Osmosis Filters
Tied with gravity-fed filters, reverse osmosis filters are hands down the best money can buy.
I’ll explain more in the next section but let’s first cover the two important questions: does reverse osmosis filter fluoride and how much does it cost?
When it comes to fluoride, my reverse osmosis filter removed ALL fluoride… taking fluoride levels from 0.6 ppm to 0.0 ppm.
Best part is that the average cost per gallon is $0.02.
Yes, you read that right… two cents.
Making reverse osmosis, by far, the cheapest way to filter fluoride from water. And for those wondering, the best brand is APEC (link to Amazon). I wouldn’t even waste my time with other brand.
Which Method Should You Choose?
If you’re looking for the cheapest way to filter fluoride, you have two options…
Reverse osmosis and gravity-fed filters.
But if you’re not sure which filter to choose, I suggest you take a look at my guide on water filters that remove fluoride (link to guide).
That’s where I help you decide which filter would be best for you.
Lastly, not all brands filter fluoride equally. So to help you avoid buying from a brand that does not filter fluoride completely, here are the test results of all 33+ filters I’ve tested.
